TORONTO, TOUGH CONVERSATIONS, & TOMORROW

For YourTrueCaptain, the city of Toronto is a heartbeat that pulses through every skit, reaction, and commentary video he shares with his over 650,000 YouTube subscribers. “Toronto is my city, my home, my everything, so sometimes when the Toronto slips out of me I can't really help it,” he laughs.

Toronto’s multicultural fabric makes him proud to represent a place where countless cultures coexist, banter, and build together. “The culture, the slang, the music, the multiculturalism; every color, culture, and language of the world exists here,” he explains.

Hometown pride fuels YourTrueCaptain – especially inspiring him with the courage to tackle uncomfortable truths. He loves that he can relate to others from completely different religious, cultural, or ethnic backgrounds through the shared medium of the city.

"Taking the TTC down to Dundas station and catching the newest flick at the Cineplex Theater. That is Toronto. Going to a house party, getting the munchies and stopping by Osmow's at 4 AM to eat Shawarmas with five of your friends. That is Toronto."

"It's hard to really put into words what this city really means to me."

That Toronto courage is what sets him apart and what has given him his huge following. One of his most-viewed videos is a raw reaction to racist moments on TV – a testament to his commitment to call out division, not shy away from it. A lot of his content and commentary revolve around meeting strangers online and rocking the boat when it comes to their offensive beliefs or opinions.

"First and foremost I feel like it's important to grasp the reality that although these are difficult topics to talk about they are in no way going away in our life time. So instead of avoiding them we're better off engaging with them through healthy discussion and expression."

His weapon of choice? Humor.

"My approach is to comedically condemn those who choose to divide us because at the end of the day, we're all one people."

His approach is obviously very direct. Shocking. Uncomfortable. But it's radically honest and arguably incredibly important.

“It’s very easy to pretend. It’s very easy to walk around and avoid things that impact you and make you feel uncomfortable. It’s very hard to tackle them head-on,” he says.

He sees himself in the tradition of comedians and commentators like Trevor Noah and Stephen Colbert, using laughter to strip hate of its power.

“Through laughter and humor all can be cured in my eyes,” he says, hoping his audience feels empowered to address bigotry openly and bravely.

The city’s influence doesn’t stop at street food or slang—it’s a source of inspiration. Icons like Drake, The Weeknd, and rising creators like IISuperwomanII and Agent00 remind him that the next big name from Toronto could be him.

"A lot of talented people have come from here," he says. "Drake, The Weeknd, Tory Lanez, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Daniel Caesar. Some of them have shown me love in the past, shared, liked my stuff, and told me how much they love and appreciate what I do. It's surreal, I grew up looking up to all of them you know?

"Adaptability is another pillar of his journey. When Omegle – a platform many creators built entire channels on – shut down in 2023, YourTrueCaptain didn’t flinch.

“Part of being a successful content creator is the ability to be able to adapt,” he says. The secret, he insists, is understanding your audience and staying true to your message. "YouTube can decide to do a complete 180 and become a cooking platform and I'll still find a way to create high quality world-class content that people all over the world can enjoy," he laughs. "This is what separates good content creators from great content creators. Great content creators adapt very effortlessly. Great content creators don't need fancy studios, expensive cameras, and million dollar production sets. They just need a laptop, microphone, and an internet connection to make world class content."

A great content creator is what YourTrueCaptain has strived to be from the very beginning. At the core of it all are the values that his Somali heritage and upbringing instilled in him: hard work, respect, mercy, and gratitude. He’s unafraid to use his platform to stand up for causes that matter, like the Free Palestine movement, even when it’s controversial. For YourTrueCaptain, staying silent isn’t an option when injustice exists. He hopes that by living out his beliefs so openly, he’ll leave a positive mark on the world and inspire others to do the same.

"Due to my upbringing however, it's hard to not use my platform to shine light on what I see is complete and absolute injustice."

"At the end of the day the more passionate you are about the content you create, the more people have a profound respect and appreciation for what you do."

When asked what tomorrow means to him, he sums it up simply: hope.

“Tomorrow is never promised for nobody," he says. "Many dreams manifest within a day. Somebody out there in the world's dream will come true tomorrow and their life will completely change forever. It'll be a day they'll never forget."
