AU/RA IS WERKIN' FROM HOME
Take a look into the covetable closet of Gen-Z innovator Au/Ra.
She may be just 19 years old, but Antiguan-German artist Au/Ra has been making waves for the past 5 years. Rising meteorically after her debut release ‘Concrete Jungle’, she has since dropped dance-inspired floor fillers like ‘Panic Room’ and the Jax Jones collaboration ‘I Miss U’. Now, though, Au/Ra is making a new world for herself with dark, horror-influenced creations. Kicking off 2021 with ‘Dead Girl!’ an ode to being tired of feeling like the invisible outsider, she recently dropped ‘Bite Marks’, which was just as playfully eerie. With more up her sleeve, we can’t wait to see what Au/Ra will spring on us the rest of this year.
To match her new sonic style, Au/Ra has been playing around with her fashion too. With her signature green locks still flowing loud and proud, Au/Ra has teamed them with perfectly clashing prints of punk rock plaid and hippie tie-dye, accessorising with everything from chains to pearls. For our second edition of WERKIN’ FROM HOME, we caught up with the boundary-breaking artist to find out what fashion means to her, and to ask her to pick the three looks she’s been living in over the past 15 months…
Fashion is something I feel like I’ve only recently paid more attention to, and I still think I’m developing and evolving my style. I’ve found that, like music, it’s just another way of expressing yourself and I really love how much an outfit can say about a person. Recently I’ve been finding inspiration from anime, especially 90s anime like Sailor Moon. I find their outfits so cute and has inspired me to show a bit more femininity in my choice of clothes. In general, I’ve been leaning a lot more into the more feminine side of my style. – Au/Ra
LOOK ONE
“i love wearing feminine tops and balancing it out with loose pants or mom jeans and another shirt layer – so this is a lil example of that! i also bought this corset during covid lockdown times, out of boredom impulse buying and after getting a lil too much into bridgerton, but i’m in love with it.”
LOOK TWO
“i’ve been at home a lot in Antigua recently – and the islander lifestyle really inspired me to start wearing more dresses. this is one i bought recently, paired with my favourite totoro from studio ghibli’s ‘my neighbor totoro’ socks and some platform trainers.”
LOOK THREE
“i just bought this pearly gummi bear necklace and plaid skort (yes skort, not skirt) at a flea market in LA and i’d like to take a moment to talk about how great skorts are. don’t worry about the wind ever again. but still look super put together from the front. what. a. concept.”
