Coming up roses: Clarks x Martine Rose
Martine Rose debuts her first campaign as guest Creative Director for Clarks.
The collection was first seen at the designer’s S/S 24 runway show. The campaign Coming Up Roses photographed by Sharna Osbourne breathes a black and white ode to the classics set in bedrooms that augment moments of nostalgia and wistfulness. The set is inspired by an archival Clarks advertising from the 1980s where beds embodied the comfort of Clarks shoes. Intimate interiors are the backdrop for the scene and they strike a balance between peculiar realities.
Nodding to Austrian artist Erwin Wurm’s ‘Convertible Fat Cars’, The Oxford, The Loafer and The Sandal are taken to new proportions but retain their classic flair. Imagined in pink, brown and green snake-effect styles, plus oxblood and black colourways, they are made from 100% recycled nylon fabric uppers, and feature breathable leather linings. This hero triptych, plus the Torhill Hi, also all feature moulded footbed supports to maximise comfort.
Martine Rose comments: ‘The collection was about comfort and this overblown feeling of softness and squidginess, so it felt easy and natural to create that feeling around bedding. Subconsciously, personal spaces have become a motif for the label that I’ve used for the collections and in various ways, and Coming Up Roses is about that intimacy that I enjoy pulling people into. There’s something so unique about personal space, a generosity to being invited to someone’s house – it breaks down the hierarchy. It’s all about connecting with people and using memory and familiarity. Clarks is such a familiar household name, everything from start to finish has been with the broadness of the mainstream in mind.
The collection is available on February 12th exclusively on MartineRose.com and Selfridges and on February 16th globally on Clarks.com and select retailers.
