PAPER SEAPLANES: MIA TEAMS UP WITH PARLEY

MIA boosts Parley’s aim of protecting 1000 islands with a new recycled eyewear capsule.

‘Paper Planes’ may have suggested that all MIA wanted to do was (gunshot times three, cash register) make some money, but the London-based maverick is never one to shy away from a do-good campaign. From speaking out about war crimes in Sri Lanka to donating performance fees to building schools in Liberia, she’s always keen to use her mic to stand up for what’s right, sacrificing extra dollar for speaking her two cents.

Now, she’s showing her support for the ocean with Parley, a global network campaigning for a sea-change in how we treat the world’s largest ecosystem. They’ve launched Clean Waves, a new luxury brand collaborating with creatives to design futuristic, planet-friendly products using Parley’s reclaimed marine plastic. She’s added to the brand’s core ‘Archetype’ model with a collection of modular shades, finished with techy, translucent frames and chunky, retro bridges.

We’re hyped to see that 100% of net proceeds goes to Parley’s Global Cleanup Network, boosting its aim of reaching 1000 islands around the world, starting with the Maldives. Inspired by MIA’s trip there (and her experience of the ocean waste washed upon its islands’ shores), every single pair has GPS coordinates engraved on them, highlighting the areas you’re helping to protect.

Parley has already supported cleanup projects in the Maldives in the past, creating its first ever recycling centre and innovation lab, building sorting sites in communities and schools and tidying the nation’s atolls.

If you’re ever done with your pair of sunnies (we doubt it) then you can also trade ‘em in to get a 20% discount on your next pair, realising Clean Waves’ circular vision. Every pair is carbon positive, too, meaning that more CO2 has been mitigated than emitted by Parley. With that in mind, you can rest easy: hopefully, sometime soon, lying on a cool, sun-dappled beach, shades-on, in the Maldives…

The new Clean Waves collection is available exclusively online from Clean Waves here, or in select Selfridges and Dover Street Market locations. The MIA edition is priced at £250, the core Archetype model is £200.
