James BKS: Reclaiming Heritage and Power Through “Na Na Benz”
French-Cameroonian artist and producer James BKS continues his mission of turning heritage into sound with his commanding new single, “Na Na Benz.” The track pays homage to the legendary Togolese women traders known as the Nana Benz, who between the 1940s and 1980s transformed Dutch wax prints into a symbol of wealth, cultural pride, and female empowerment across West Africa.
In his signature Afro-hip-hop style, James merges the intensity of drill with the pulse of Cameroonian bikutsi rhythms, crafting a sonic experience that feels both ancestral and future-facing.
Co-produced by Roark Bailey (Kanye West, Playboi Carti, SAINt JHN), “Na Na Benz” delivers pounding percussion and hypnotic mantras that mirror the Nana Benz’s original blueprint — owning their vision, leading with confidence, and shaping culture on their own terms.
Accompanied by a powerful video directed by James himself, the song bridges the past and present, honoring women whose entrepreneurial spirit redefined independence in Africa.
