Guy Gerber Unveils ‘Misirlou’ Ep, Introducing A Bold New Sonic Chapter
CINEMATIC GUITAR TEXTURES AND DEFIANT SONGWRITING SIGNAL A CREATIVE EVOLUTION
Globally renowned DJ and producer Guy Gerber returns with Misirlou, a striking new EP that marks a bold creative evolution in his musical journey. Blending surf-inspired guitar work, rockabilly undertones, and modern electronic production, the release finds Gerber expanding beyond the deep melodic house and techno sound that has long defined his work, venturing into a broader sonic landscape rooted in melody, attitude, and emotional depth.
From the outset of his career, Gerber positioned himself slightly against the prevailing current. When much of electronic music leaned minimal and austere, he introduced harmonic richness and melodic layering into the underground. With Misirlou, that instinct continues. Rather than chasing algorithm-driven trends or narrowing his sound to fit a specific lane, he draws from 1950s and 1960s rock and roll, spaghetti western atmospheres, punk energy, and the bohemian spirit of Ibiza while maintaining the immersive pulse that defines his sound. It is still electronic, but it breathes differently.
“Over the last year I found myself drawn back to music that felt alive and rebellious,” says Gerber. “Songs with melody, attitude, and emotion. Misirlou is about refusing to narrow your voice just because the industry tells you to.”
The title track, “Misirlou,” reimagines early twentieth century musical lineage through Gerber’s lens, channeling surf guitar textures and cinematic intensity into a contemporary framework. Much of the instrumentation is self-performed, with Gerber playing guitar, bass guitar, most drums, Hammond organ, and pipe organ. The result dissolves the boundary between organic and electronic sound, merging live performance with modern production precision.
The B side, “Don’t Turn Away From Love,” leans further into rockabilly energy and romantic drama. Its title is sampled from David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, reinforcing the emotional and slightly surreal tone that runs through the broader body of work. The reference underscores the cinematic DNA shaping this new phase, where vulnerability and defiance coexist within a more expansive sonic palette.
The EP arrives following a high-profile period of international activity that has seen Gerber move fluidly between music and visual art. As he continues expanding his presence in the contemporary art world, Gerber debuted his SEPARATE WAYS solo exhibition in New York City last year, a multidisciplinary visual art collection exploring themes of reflection and transformation. Earlier this year he also participated in México Art Week, before bringing SEPARATE WAYS to Los Angeles during Frieze Week, alongside a performance for more than 3,000 attendees at Framework’s RE:FRAME event. That multidisciplinary momentum now feeds directly into his music, with Misirlou translating those themes of reflection and transformation into sound.
Created across Ibiza, Tokyo, Mexico, Los Angeles, and Rio de Janeiro, the forthcoming body of work reflects a global yet deeply personal recording process. All percussion was recorded in Rio de Janeiro, while trumpet parts were tracked in Mexico, the only instrument not performed by Gerber himself. Some rhythmic foundations originate in drum machines, but many are layered with live-performed drums, creating a hybrid pulse that feels textured and human.
As the creator of the internationally revered RUMORS series and a consistent presence on the world’s most iconic stages, Gerber has built his career on evolution without compromise. Misirlou marks the first step into a broader and more defiant chapter, one that bridges cinematic storytelling, rock lineage, and underground electronic depth into a sound that feels both timeless and forward-facing. A full album is expected later this year, with Gerber also planning to debut the new music through special live performances. The year will also mark the 15th anniversary of his globally celebrated RUMORS event series, with a major celebration planned in Los Angeles this May.
