At just 19, asteria has already carved out a sonic universe that feels equal parts chaotic and meticulously crafted. Born Matthew Joines in New Zealand and now based in Warsaw, the producer, vocalist, and self-proclaimed “sonic anarchist” is reimagining what music can sound—and look—like in the digital age.
With the release of his debut album ASTERIA VOL. 1 on August 20, the artist cements his reputation for fusing high-octane beats, looping hooks, and an anarchic energy that refuses to be boxed into genre labels. The 12-track record brims with futuristic production and features collaborations with Odetari (“TELL ME LIES”) and kets4eki (“TOO MANY LINES,” “DON’T UNDERSTAND IT”), alongside digital surrealism in the form of Hatsune Miku’s vocals on “WHAT YOU WANT!” Standouts like “EYES ON ME” and “MOVE YOUR BODY”—the latter accompanied by a provocative video filmed inside Warsaw’s The Club No1—showcase both the boldness of his vision and his embrace of androgyny, performing in both male and female personas.
Following his earlier collab EP Cute Songs for Gangsters with 6arelyhuman, ASTERIA VOL. 1 signals a new wave of electronic rebellion: fast, frenetic, and fully immersed in internet culture. As founder of Anarchist Sanctuary, asteria isn’t just making music—he’s building an aesthetic ecosystem for a generation raised online.
