Backstage at Roskilde with Tamara Mneney

By Zach Collier

Every year, over 130,000 guests arrive just south of the Danish city of Roskilde to experience live performances from their favorite artists. Roskilde Festival regularly welcomes over 170 musicians of varying genres to perform across its eight stages, with a lineup that boasts a blend of the world’s largest acts alongside tenacious and exciting up-and-comers. It’s been a big deal for over 50 years now. Attending Roskilde Festival as a patron is a thrilling experience.

Performing at Roskilde as an artist is a dream come true

On July 1, photographers captured the experience of Tamara Mneney backstage as she prepared to take on Roskilde Festival. Hailing from the Faroe Islands in Denmark, Mneney went from writing songs in her bedroom in the small village of Fuglafjørður to playing one of the world’s biggest stages. From wardrobe to her concert performance, everything backstage was shot candidly on film.

Mneney is making a name for herself on the back of strong singles and live performances. Listeners have praised her vocal prowess and her live band in equal measure, dazzling them with her take on R&B and dance-laden alt pop. Her latest single, “Winner (Heartbreak of the Year)” dropped ahead of her festival performance and embraces dancy world beats while leaning heavily on soulfully smooth melodies.

“I’m going back to my roots, with pride of where I come from,” says Mneney, who is part Tanzanian and recently started performing under her full name to better represent her heritage. “My music reflects my personal journey and I want my name to do the same.”

Mneney will perform next on August 3 at New Note Festival.
