Leader of the New School. The title of the debut mixtape by New York hip-hop artist Bay Swag. Being a leader is something he and I both understand; growing up fast, carrying the weight of your family’s legacy on your shoulders, and breaking generational curses before you even know what they are. On his long-awaited debut album Damaged Thoughts, Bay does just that.

Ten years in the making, Damaged Thoughts is a journey through survival, triumph, and self-definition. On the album’s title track, “Damaged Thoughts,” Bay opens up about his mother beating breast cancer, a moment that carries weight beyond lyrics. “My mom is a soldier. I watched her beat that shit with no complaints,” he shared during our conversation. Then there’s his father’s incarceration, a black cloud that became a ray of sunshine. Against all odds, Bay hustled to pay for his father’s legal fees with the money he earned from music. “That was the first time I felt like a man. Like I could hold my family down for real,” he told me. “He couldn’t do for me, but I could do for him. That meant everything.”

This isn’t a story of overnight success. What everyone sees now, the ladies, the luxury, and, pun intended, swag, is the result of years of discipline and showing up.

On “Matte Black,” one of the album’s standout records produced by 808 Mafia, he raps with unshakable confidence, letting the world know his rise is rooted in resilience. Paying homage to the late South Carolina hip-hop artist. “It’s crazy, I started from nothing, it’s like Speaker Knockerz.”

Of course, Bay still makes room for the flair and flirtation he’s known for. His playboy swagger and love for women show up unapologetically on records like “Tropics” featuring Quavo. It’s sexy, slick, and cinematic, but even here, there’s dimension. “I grew up with all women in the house,” Bay told me. “So when I talk about women, it ain’t just lust. It’s love. It’s respect.”

This album is a study in duality, from the wild and the wounded, the party and the purpose. From sexy drill to soul-baring introspection, Bay fl exes his full range: heartbreaks, hood anthems, hustler hymns. It’s all here!

Bay’s emotional depth didn’t come from studio sessions or social trends; it came from lived experience. Raised by women, guided by pain, and defined by resilience, he brings a sense of emotional clarity to every verse. “It taught me how to move with care and intention,” he said.

From producing early records for Cash Cobain to helping pioneer a new lane for New York rap, Bay Swag is no longer just a rising star—he’s an architect. His viral success with “Fisherrr” introduced him to the world, but Damaged Thoughts is the project that cements him as an artist with staying power.

He’s a visionary! Inspired by moguls like Yo Gotti and Coach K of QC, Bay isn’t chasing fame; he’s constructing a legacy. Beyond the mic, Bay is laying the foundation for generational wealth from a jewelry line, real estate investments, and creating opportunities for the people who held him down along the way. For every kid who’s been counted out. For every artist seeking an opportunity. For every mother and father who wants to see their child succeed.

Ten years in, and he’s just getting started. I’d say that’s one hell of an overnight success.
