Deadbeat Girl reveals anthemic new single ‘Soft’
Today Deadbeat Girl (they/them) shares their soaring new single ‘Soft’. Proudly sensitive, the New York- based rising artist shakes off judgement with their infectious new single.
Deadbeat Girl is Val Olson, an alt, indie-artist who’s already been making waves as someone special to watch. Dedicated to unapologetically being their authentic self, Deadbeat Girl is here to encourage you to do the same. Soft is co-written with Brooklyn-Born riser Chloe Lilac and produced by longtime collaborators Chris Petrosino and Rob McCurdy of Noiseclub.
Sharing more behind the track, Deadbeat Girl explained; ‘I was once in a relationship where my partner at the time made me feel like I was too soft or not masculine enough. They felt I was “not aggressive enough” or “too emotional”. I feel like a common experience for masculine presenting non-men is the expectation to act within the negative stereotypes of a cis-man in society. Sometimes we are expected to be emotionless, angry, aggressive, and big/strong but that is not what should be expected of anyone. People should be able to be who they are without feeling sorry or explaining themselves.
Be who you are and don’t let fuckin anyone tell you otherwise! Crying is cool, I promise.’
Since launching in 2022, Deadbeat Girl’s sound has evolved and expanded. Transcending genre rigidity, it offers a unique take on ‘alternative music’. A connoisseur across genres, Val pulls their inspiration from a wide range of artists from 90s and early 2000s icons such as Nirvana, Death Cab for Cutie, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Pearl Jam to more modern voices such as Day Wave, Girl In Red and more.
Deadbeat Girl released their debut EP ‘What Will It Take?’ back in 2023. The record resonated with many as they shared their poignant journey of self acceptance and discovery through their music. Since then, they have gone on to release more stand-out indie-alt moments and in the process their streams are fast approaching 10 million on Spotify alone. Atwood Magazine stressed that ‘Deadbeat Girl demands our undivided attention’ whilst The Line of Best Fit commented that ‘They’ve got the world in their hands’. Not to mention more love from the likes of Clash, Kaltblut, Ones To Watch, DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Wonderland and them who drew comparisons to ‘The Cranberries and Garbage.’
With an impressive world tour already under their belt supporting the great Ari Abdul and more live news to follow soon, Deadbeat Girl is definitely an artist to keep an eye on.
