Deadbeat Girl shares their electrifying second EP 'Self-Destructor'

New York-based, alt-indie artist Deadbeat Girl (they/them) returns with their striking new EP Self-Destructor. The six-track release features four brand-new songs, firmly cementing Deadbeat Girl's place on the map.

Across the six-track triumph, Deadbeat Girl (Val Olson) delves into their lived experiences with self destruction. They touch on the complexities of love, life, gender and their own inner workings. Sharing more they explained: “I believe this EP is for yearners, those who feel insecure, and those who are constantly fighting a battle in their head. I’ve learned a lot about myself through writing this EP and I have also grown an appreciation as well as an acceptance for the ugly parts of myself in the process.”

The new EP marks a new chapter for Deadbeat Girl, showcasing a career rising alongside their unapologetic authenticity.

They promote a fearless, defiant message of unconditional inclusion through their music and it's a message that hasn't gone unnoticed by their loyal fanbase.

The EP's title track Self-Destructor is a stellar dose of anthemic indie with pop-punk qualities. Born from seeking a level of comfort in familiar feelings of depression, Self Destructor sees Val push out of their comfort zone and find the light. Sharing more, they explained; For me, and I think others, it can be easy to slip into a depressive mindset and find comfort in it. Sometimes I tend to romanticize it or feel nostalgic for depressing times in my life in some sick way but turns out many people feel the same. Once you experience chaos and hardship for a long time, it can slowly become all that you know and are comfortable with.

In previously unreleased track ‘Gentle, Hazy’, Val explores their journey with gender through empowering and honest songwriting. Dreamy vocals capture the complexity of emotion that comes with moving through the world as a transmasc/nonbinary person. Sharing more they said: “I often feel gender envy toward people, especially some men who move through the world with an effortless blend of softness and grounded masculinity. This song isn’t about those men themselves, but about my own desire to embody that same gentle kind of confidence. It’s striking to see people who express the masculinity I’m reaching for do it so naturally, almost without even noticing.”

Since launching in 2022, Deadbeat Girl’s sound has evolved and expanded. Transcending genre rigidity, it offers a unique take on ‘alternative music’. A connoisseur across genres, Val pulls their inspiration from a wide range of artists from 90s and early 2000s icons such as Nirvana, Death Cab for Cutie, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Pearl Jam to more modern voices such as Day Wave, Girl In Red and more.
