Fearless and Focused

HYOYEON has been a force in the K-pop world since her debut with GIRLS’ GENERATION, known for her sharp dance skills, bold style, and fearless creativity. Over the years, she’s grown into a dynamic solo artist and DJ, constantly pushing her own boundaries. In this interview, HYOYEON shares her thoughts on music, growth, and what continues to inspire her both on and off the stage.

From her early days as the main dancer of GIRLS’ GENERATION to carving out her own lane as a solo artist and DJ, HYOYEON’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Known for her fearless approach to music and performance, she continues to evolve with each new release. We caught up with HYOYEON to talk about her creative process, personal growth, and the moments that have shaped her along the way.

Music & Artistic Journey

1. You’ve had such a dynamic evolution—from GIRLS’ GENERATION to DJ HYO. What does music mean to you today compared to when you first debuted?

HYOYEON Music always feels new to me, and it’s become even more meaningful as a way to express who I truly am.

2. You seamlessly fuse different genres in your solo work as both an artist and DJ. How do you approach selecting or producing your solo tracks?

I grew up in an environment where I was naturally surrounded by music from an early age. Over time, I got to understand which styles and genres allow me to express myself most authentically, especially the ones that are upbeat and full of energy. That's the kind of music I feel most comfortable with, and where I feel the most like myself.

3. Can you walk us through the creative process behind your latest single, Retro Romance?

As the lyrics say, the song is about breaking free from everyday stress and embracing freedom and passionate love. That’s the feeling I wanted to capture while working on it. It’s one of those songs that instantly lifts my mood whenever it comes on during a drive. It’s exactly the kind of energy and vibe I love.

4. You've worked with some incredible collaborators. Is there anyone you dream of collaborating with in the future—Korean or international?

I’d really love the chance to collaborate with Doechii someday!

Performance & Identity

5. You’re known as one of K-pop’s most powerful performers. How has your dance identity evolved over the years?

When I first debuted, I mainly showcased powerful dance styles like hip-hop, popping, and locking. But as I’ve grown more comfortable on stage over time, I think my natural groove has started to shine through more. Especially through my solo activities, I’ve been able to explore a wider range of genres—from groove-based choreography to even dance sports.

6. Performing as DJ HYO and as part of GIRLS' GENERATION must feel totally different. What’s the biggest mindset shift between being on stage solo vs. with a group?

When I performed as part of GIRLS’ GENERATION, the focus was on syncing with the other members and perfecting the details together. Having teammates to rely on and create synergy with gave me a lot of strength. Performing as a solo artist definitely comes with more pressure since I have to carry the entire performance from start to finish on my own. So I prepare through intense image training and a lot of practices before stepping on stage.

7. What kind of stories or emotions are you most excited to express through your music right now?

Let’s love freely, passionately, and with joy!

Global Impact & Style

8. You’ve performed all over the world. How has your international fanbase shaped the kind of music or energy you bring to your work?

Whenever I see our S♡NE lightsticks overseas, it instantly lifts my energy on stage. It truly feels like we’re creating the performance together. That support helps me stay focused and give the best performance I can.

9. Your fashion is always bold and experimental. How would you describe your current style in three words?

Confidence! I see fashion as one of the ways I express who I am.

What’s Next

10. What can fans expect from you in 2025—new sounds, surprises, or upcoming shows?

This year, I’ve been working on music as DJ HYO, and I’m getting everything ready to share it with my fans in the best way possible. I'm coming to London this June—see you at SMTOWN LIVE 2025!

11. If HYO were to headline her dream music festival, what would the vibe be and who else would be on the lineup?

If I ever get the chance to be a headliner, I want to create a stage so surreal that it makes me wonder, “Was that a dream?” As for the lineup, I’d love to perform alongside artists I truly respect like Yellow Claw and Zedd.
