When two global forces in fashion and music collide, the result is more than a capsule collection—it’s a cultural moment. In an exclusive TMRW interview, Billionaire Boys Club, founded by Pharrell Williams, teams up with TEAM WANG design, the creative label helmed by Jackson Wang, to present Life Is a Race—a collaboration inspired by motorsports and fueled by identity, freedom, and ambition.
This isn't the first time Pharrell and Jackson have intersected creatively. After launching TEAM JOOPITER together on Pharrell’s digital auction platform in 2024, the duo now returns with a fashion-forward line that blends speed and storytelling—where individuality takes the driver’s seat.
In this conversation, Jackson opens up about the vision behind the designs, the deeper meaning of movement, and how style can be both armor and expression.
“This collection isn’t about winning,” he says. “It’s about owning your journey—and making it yours.”
What inspired the title Life Is a Race, and how did that concept translate into the design language of this collection?
Life Is a Race came from a realization I had during my year off—that we’re all constantly running, chasing something, but we rarely stop to ask why. That pressure, that constant motion—it’s personal. This collection reflects that. We pulled from motorsport aesthetics to channel the adrenaline, the movement, the speed—but also the solitude that can come with it. Life’s not just about winning—it’s about figuring out who you are.
This is your second collaboration with one of Pharrell’s ventures—how has your creative chemistry evolved since TEAM JOOPITER?
Back then, Pharrell already felt like a big brother, but he has truly become a mentor to me—not just in fashion, but in life. There’s a deeper level of trust between us now, and I’ve learned so much from him.
TEAM WANG design is known for breaking boundaries. What was the biggest creative risk you took with this capsule?
TEAM WANG design is basically my closet. We only create what I truly like. And honestly, that’s the biggest risk. We don’t follow trends or chase what’s popular—we just do what feels right, what represents me. It’s the same with this collection. We’re focused on staying true to ourselves.
How do you and Pharrell approach individuality in fashion differently—and where do you overlap?
Pharrell is a visionary—he expresses individuality through freedom, through pushing creative boundaries fearlessly. For me, individuality starts with knowing yourself first. We approach it differently, but the intention behind it is the same: it’s not just about culture, it’s about who you are at this moment.
Design & Aesthetic
Motorsport was a major inspiration here. What elements from that world made it into the silhouettes and styling?
A few of the jackets reflect racing suit structures—streamlined, functional, but with attitude. The world of racing, to me, isn’t just about speed—it’s about precision, focus, and mindset. We tried to capture all of that in the pieces.
Minimalism and ambition are two forces driving this collection—how do you personally balance those in your own life?
During my break, I stripped everything down. Minimalism helped me hear my own voice again. Now, when I build, I build with intention. That’s what this collection is about too—clean, purposeful, direct.
Were there any personal memories or experiences that found their way into specific pieces?
Yes—definitely. For this racing jacket, we incorporated one of my favorite elements from Chinese culture: the pan kou fastening. It’s something both the brand and I really love—it represents heritage. On the biker jacket, we added the Oriental Pearl Tower as a patchwork design, a landmark from the city I grew up in. It’s a small tribute to where I came from, and those memories are stitched into the design.
Philosophy & Brand Identity
TEAM WANG design’s motto is “Know yourself, make your own history.” How does this collection move that message forward?
It’s all about knowing who you are—even when it’s messy or unclear—and choosing to keep going. Life Is a Race doesn’t mean you have to be first. It means you have to run it your way, on your terms. That’s how you make history that’s truly yours.
Billionaire Boys Club’s ethos—“wealth is of the heart and mind, not the pocket”—aligns deeply with your own. How do you hope fans interpret that through the clothes?
I hope they wear it because it resonates with them. This drop isn’t about flexing—it’s about self-expression. It’s not about buying into a brand, but stepping into a mindset. Wealth is of the heart and mind, not the pocket reminds us that true value comes from creativity, ideas, and character. That’s the energy we’re channeling. Pharrell has always empowered the next generation to be unapologetically themselves—building community through culture, originality, and purpose. I want people to feel identity, not status, when they wear the clothes.
Culture, Future, and Movement
What’s one piece from the collection you think fans will resonate with most—and why?
The biker jacket. It’s got an attitude, but also restraint. It tells a story. And for the signed version being auctioned with JOOPITER, it also carries meaning. It’s fashion with impact.
“Life Is a Race” can be read many ways. What’s your message to fans who are still figuring out their pace?
Don’t let the world rush you. It’s your race. Your pace. Take the time you need. Find out who you are before you run. That’s the real win.
Billionaire Boys Club has stood the test of time. What does legacy mean to you in fashion—and how do you hope this collection adds to it?
Legacy is about intention. It’s what stays after the hype fades. Pharrell has built something that has lasted because it’s rooted in truth. With this collection, I want to contribute something honest—something that speaks to this moment in my life.
If you could describe this collection in one word—not about style, but about feeling—what would it be, and why?
Liberation. This collection is about breaking free—from expectations, from pressure, from the noise. It’s the feeling of finally being able to express yourself honestly and live life on your own terms. Inspired by racing, it’s about freedom in motion and finding your own path without limits.
