With over 17 million YouTube subscribers and billions of views, J.Fla became a global name through intimate, emotion-packed cover songs that traveled the world without needing translation. But behind the screen—and beneath the label of “cover artist”—J.Fla was quietly building something deeper: her own sound, her own story, her own way forward.
Now, the South Korean singer-songwriter, producer, and performer is stepping into her boldest era yet with a brand-new independent EP set to release in late summer 2025. Written, produced, and recorded entirely in her private studio in Seoul, the project fuses vintage analog textures, alternative pop-rock energy, and raw, self-reflective lyrics that mark a distinct break from her past.
At the center is “Stellar Paradox,” a powerful anthem born out of years of growth and introspection—crafted with retro ribbon mics and ‘70s gear but designed for modern listeners seeking motion, momentum, and meaning.
In this exclusive TMRW conversation, J.Fla opens up about her transition from covers to original music, the power of creative independence, and why being true to yourself—especially when no one is watching—is the most rebellious thing an artist can do.
1. Let’s start with the transformation—how did it feel to shift from doing covers to writing and producing your own original EP?
For me, the period when I was doing covers felt like unexpectedly stumbling upon an oasis in my artistic journey. It was a place where I grew but I also found myself striving hard to meet others’ expectations. Eventually, I knew it was time to set off again towards my own destination.
2. “Stellar Paradox” is such a vivid, powerful title. What inspired the track and its themes of duality and inner conflict?
When I was known as a cover artist, I felt incredibly grateful and fulfilled by the love I received. Yet at the same time, I worried that this happiness was delaying my growth as an original artist. I feared people wouldn’t care about my own music or message. Happiness and anxiety existed side by side, inspiring the themes of duality and inner conflict in 'Stellar Paradox.'
3. You mentioned the lyrics lived on your iPad for years. What changed that finally allowed you to bring the song to life?
For a long time, caught between joy and fear, I was reluctant to fully embrace the title of 'artist'. Now that those doubts have faded away, I feel it’s the perfect moment to finally share this song with the world.
4. You fully produced this EP yourself. What was the biggest creative challenge—and the most rewarding part—of that DIY process?
The greatest challenge wasn’t so much creative but technical - making sure every tiny detail was right. But the most rewarding part was hearing the final result match the sound I’d imagined perfectly, knowing I had achieved exactly what I'd envisioned.
5. There’s a distinct retro sound throughout, from the ribbon mics to vintage gear. What drew you to that analog texture and nostalgic feel?
I’ve always loved the warmth and sincerity that analogue gear captures. Ribbon mics and vintage equipment allowed me to infuse my music with emotional depth and an organic feel, something timeless yet deeply personal.
6. How would you describe this EP in three words—for someone who’s only ever heard your cover work?
Authentic, transformative, energetic.
7. Was there a moment during production when you realized: “This is who I really am as an artist”?
I created countless versions of the final mix of 'Stellar Paradox,' to the point my family joked, “Are you playing the same thing over and over?” I found genuine joy in obsessing over tiny details only I would notice. In that slightly humorous moment, I realised this meticulousness was exactly who I am as an artist.
8. Many artists struggle with being boxed in. How did you mentally and emotionally break free from the ‘cover artist’ identity?
In theory, it was simple. I just had to stop doing covers. But emotionally, the fear of being forgotten or losing the love I'd received made my heart ache. Still, I knew I had to leave that oasis. I kept reminding myself there’s something even more exciting waiting for me at the end of this new road.
9. You’ve always connected with fans around the world through YouTube. How are you hoping your original music reaches and resonates with them differently?
I hope listeners feel a deeper connection through my original songs, seeing their own stories reflected and finding the courage to embrace who they truly are. I’d love for this music to spark a stronger emotional bond between us.
10. If “Stellar Paradox” is the soundtrack to motion and momentum, what are the moments in your own life that this song reflects?
It reflects moments of uncertainty and boldness like deciding to break away from what’s comfortable and familiar, and moving towards something unknown yet exciting. This song mirrors my journey toward independence and self-discovery.
11. What does independence mean to you—not just as an artist, but as a person?
Independence means freedom to express who I truly am, without external expectations or limitations. It's about living authentically, creatively, and courageously both in music and life.
