I found myself in one of those rare moments where an artist finds you, and you immediately wonder how you hadn’t discovered them sooner. That’s how I felt stumbling across DATSMARWAN. His music kept me there. Raw, beautifully shocking, and somehow still incredibly considered visuals were the first thing that stood out to me. There was something refreshing about his sound, something I couldn’t quite place. I kept listening.
My headphones simply refused to come off, and as I kept listening, the questions flooded: Who was making this? Where did it come from? What was behind it all? And, perhaps most importantly, will there be more? Those questions eventually led me to Marwan, a Belgian-Moroccan artist spending his time between Europe and Los Angeles, who built his music around the same thing that first drew me in: curiosity.
It was specifically the contrast in his work that intrigued me, so we sat down to talk more about his creative vision and musical direction.
Marwan's music, if anything, reflects duality. Strength and struggle, like a slap and a hug at the same time. It exposes a harsh reality, yet builds strength to go against the grain. It explores the depth of Marwan's inner world through a carefully vulnerable language, touching on themes of his own inner turmoil.
