Richill Melancholy

Reconstruction, Ruin, and Clothes That Aren't For Everybody

By Kuya Allen

Distressed Romance is a contradiction if you think about it for more than a second. Romance is something you keep. Distress means something got used. Richill Melancholy builds both into the same garment and doesn't seem interested in resolving it. Silk velvet on a motorcycle jacket. Cupro where you'd expect cotton. Sacred hearts, winged swords, a world that pulls from religious imagery and horror and whatever else catches his eye, assembled one image at a time until the pattern shows up on its own. He works out of New York, manufactures in China, and some of the first shops to carry him were in Japan. We talked about designing from instinct instead of concept, why he likes it when the wash surprises him, and what happens when your marks and his stop being separate things.
