Polynesian (Maori) actress Te Ao o Hinepehinga steps into the spotlight with her role as Kupuohi, the wife of Jason Momoa’s character, in the epic new Apple TV+ drama Chief of War, premiering August 1, 2025. Set against the sweeping backdrop of 18th-century Hawaii, the series follows a Native Hawaiian warrior’s fight to unite the islands and resist colonization—based on the true story of Ka‘iana. Starring alongside Momoa, Luciane Buchanan, and Cliff Curtis, Te brings power and authenticity to a story told through an indigenous lens.

Born in Gisborne, New Zealand, and raised in a politically active Maori family, Te’s journey began in activism before she shifted to performing arts. A graduate of NASDA with a degree in Music Theatre, she started as a professional Latin dancer and showgirl before transitioning into acting. Her breakout roles in Black Hands, Head High, and Breakwatershowcased her range and rising star power.

Off-screen, Te is an advocate for indigenous rights, a founding member of ICAN, and an avid yogi, runner, and gardener.

In this Q&A, she opens up about her roots, her journey from activism to acting, and what it means to bring Chief of Warto life.
