SHOWNU X HYUNGWON have always operated slightly apart from the MONSTA X main frame – a unit built on physicality, on the kind of stage presence that doesn't need much explaining. If you've caught them live, you already know.
LOVE ME is their second EP together, and it arrives with something to prove – like two people who know exactly what they're capable of and are finally ready to push past it.
The seven tracks here split in interesting ways. It's a lot to land so soon after Unfold – the group's third English studio album – but MONSTA X's output has rarely felt this consistent, and LOVE ME earns its place. There's the intensity fans already associate with the duo – "Do You Love Me," the title track, landed after going head-to-head with one of HYUNGWON's own compositions, and it won out for a reason. But the album doesn't just sit there in familiar territory. HYUNGWON, who produced several tracks on the project, has been steering things in directions that diversify the duo's image – softer textures, stranger emotional registers, a Latin-inflected Afrobeat cut that gives SHOWNU room to move differently.
The solo tracks are worth paying attention to. "Around & Go" is SHOWNU's first real solo statement, and he treats it that way. "NO AIR" extends a thread HYUNGWON started at a previous concert – same emotional core, opposite element. "I wanted to go in the opposite direction," he says, "with something colder and centered around water."
What the track-by-track commentary below makes clear is that this is a record made by two people who are listening to each other. HYUNGWON admits he picked "Breathe" while picturing SHOWNU performing it. SHOWNU calls "Accelerator" the most hopeful thing HYUNGWON has ever made. That kind of attentiveness doesn't always translate to record – here, it does.
Below, they walk you through LOVE ME – track by track.
SHOWNU “Do You Love Me” ended up becoming the title track after going head-to-head with one of HYUNGWON’s songs. Since it had been a while since our last comeback, we really thought about what side of ourselves we wanted to show this time, and we felt it would be exciting to come back with something more intense and powerful. After a lot of discussion, we landed on this song.
HYUNGWON Even though it’s not one of my own songs, I was really drawn to how it connects back to our first album and carries a similar theme. Since the hook repeats throughout the song, I also liked how it really captures this sense of longing and desire, almost like we’re chasing after something. I think that emotional pull is what made it feel right as the title track.
HYUNGWON While making this song, I wanted to flip the image people usually associate with SHOWNU X HYUNGWON. Most people think of intense performances and strong choreography first, so we wanted to take things in a completely different direction. The song is still about love, but it compares love to the things people believe in—whether that’s another person, their own routines, or even religion.
SHOWNU I really love this track too. I remember putting a lot of effort into the recording because I wanted to do the track justice and express it as well as possible.
SHOWNU Even though this is only our second album as a unit, this song shows a side of us we’ve never really shown before. I think it’s a bit different from what fans might expect from us. It also feels like the kind of song that would be really fun to perform at festivals or live events.
HYUNGWON Just like the title suggests, the song is about someone completely taking over your mind. While making it, I kept imagining SHOWNU and me performing it on stage and becoming one with the fans in that moment.
SHOWNU Like, “We want everyone to come together through this song.”
SHOWNU I think this song feels really fresh and different for us too. It has this addictive Afrobeat Latin-inspired sound, and it’s the kind of track where we can show a really sexy performance.
HYUNGWON One of the reasons I picked this song was because I could already picture SHOWNU performing it while singing and dancing. Especially imagining him with a bit more of a tan.
SHOWNU What about you?
HYUNGWON Honestly, I picked it while thinking about you first.
SHOWNU Okay.
HYUNGWON I actually worked on this song quite a while ago. I had been holding onto the track, and at some point I started thinking, “What if we made a song people could listen to while driving—something that could instantly lift your mood when your energy drops.” I created it with this idea in mind: “Trust me, follow me, and let’s hit the accelerator together.”
SHOWNU Out of all the songs HYUNGWON has made, this might be the most uplifting and hopeful one.
SHOWNU The very first thing that grabbed my attention about this song was the intro. Honestly, I liked it so much that you could almost say the intro is what made me choose it. Since it also feels like my first real solo track, I paid a lot of attention to the stage performance and choreography as well.
HYUNGWON I performed a solo stage for a song called “Wildfire” at one of our concerts before, and I think this track feels like an extension of that. Back then, the theme was fire and heat, but this time I wanted to go in the opposite direction with something colder and centered around water. The emotions are still the same, but I wanted to express them in a different way this time.
SHOWNU It’s the kind of song that makes MONBEBE lose their breath.
HYUNGWON I made it with the idea that when MONBEBE watches this performance, they’d feel completely breathless.
