Today, we're introducing you to Yoga expert, meditation practitioner, and actress Michelle Núñez. Michelle is a series regular on Tyler Perry's long-running BET+ series Ruthless, where she plays the character of Zane. The show is a gripping exploration of loyalty, survival, and identity set within the high-stakes world of a secretive organization. Her nuanced portrayal has earned acclaim from fans and critics alike. Season 5B premiered today on BET+.
Ruthless just launched a new season. Without spoiling anything, what can fans expect from the story? What is one development your character experiences that you're most excited about?
Fans can expect a season full of intensity, disrupted loyalties, and shocking revelations! Zane faces a major loss—something she’s held on to from the start. As she navigates a world that constantly challenges her wellbeing and mental health, she undergoes a transformation that pushes her to her limits. I’m excited for everyone to see Zane’s growth as she learns to face these challenges with resilience and courage. It’s been such a rewarding experience and an honor and joy to bring this journey to life, and I hope it resonates.
What is your favorite behind the scenes moment from this upcoming season?
On our last day of shooting, two of my cast mates and I visited the set to watch scenes we weren’t part of.
It was inspiring to see our crew outside of the pressure of our roles and witness the hard work and love they put into the show. It was a reminder of the incredible teamwork behind the scenes.
Of the 4 prior seasons, which is your favorite and why?
Season 5 is my favorite overall, but if I had to choose from the first four, it would be Season 3. It was a pivotal moment for Zane, where we see her character shift dramatically. It was such a powerful time for both the character and for me as an actor. That season set the tone for how she evolves throughout the rest of the show, and it gave us the chance to dive deep into who Zane truly is. I’m eternally thankful and in awe of how we brought that transformation to life.
What is the first film or television series you remember watching in your life? Why do you think it had such an impact on you?
I can’t remember the first film or series I watched, but I’m pretty sure I was born with Netflix loading [laughs]. One film that definitely had an impact on me, though, is Finding Nemo. My sister and I would watch it every single day after school. It was like a ritual for us! We were so invested in Marlin’s journey to find Nemo. We could practically recite the whole movie! It became this comforting, almost sacred experience that brought us closer.
I think it stuck with me because it showed the power of persistence, family, and love, which are values that are incredibly important to me.
If you could join the cast of any classic film or TV show, which would you join and why?
Hands down, The Lord of the Rings. I’d play Aragorn, Legolas, or Samwise. Each of them is such a strong representation of loyalty, courage, and friendship. I grew up with these films as the soundtrack of my life, and I've always been drawn to the way these characters supported Frodo on his journey. It’s about fighting for what’s right and battling evil, which is something I deeply connect with. Kind of like Mulan, I could see myself suiting up and fighting for the greater good, no matter what. I have The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King all sitting on my bookshelf. I bring them to set with me sometimes to read between scenes.
Outside of Ruthless, what other projects do you have in the pipeline?
I’m so excited I could burst at the seams, but I can’t share any details yet! BUT! I’m always creating and sharing my heart with my community through art, poetry and music so come through and let’s create something! Michelle.art is where you’ll find me.
